DEVOTION – DAY 92

Psalm 104:1-2 “High View Of God”

Psalm 104:1-2 “Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent.”

If you have ever made something whether it is baking a cake, or cooking someone’s favorite dish, or making a new dress, or knitting a cardigan for someone, you will enjoy the appreciation and praise of others who get to enjoy the cake, or dish, or wear the new dress or cardigan that was made. For what you have created would give testimony to your creative and skillful hand. In the same way, when God created the heavens and the earth, what He has created give a powerful testimony to His power, skill and creativity. All nature calls our attention to the hand that made everything that is so splendid and yet so complex. As the psalmist reminds us that we can only sing praises to the Lord, our God and marvel at His greatness, splendor and majesty.

That sense of awe and wonder of the majestic God is mostly lost today. Many people take the splendor of nature for granted. In fact, many people have become casual in their relationship with God. Many people have lost their high view of God. Because of Covid-19 pandemic and many church services are now only available online, some have become used to following church services and worshipping God sitting on their beds and in their pajamas. Some pray and expect God to answer their prayers at once and if their prayers are unanswered, they become angry with God. Some do not even pray and only go to Church during Christmas or Easter. Some use God’s name in vain. Compare this to ancient Jews who do not want to speak God’s name for fear of dishonoring Him.

I once went on holiday to a small island in the east coast. There was no electricity on the island and at night, when we look up at the sky, we can see countless stars. It is hard to see the stars in our city because of the glare from artificial light. But in rural areas where there is little artificial light, the night sky can be seen as a vast carpet of stars. They are indeed the heavens stretched by God like a tent. They bear testimony to how great God is. We are reminded that there is a Creator of the Universe. That Creator is God. And He deserves our worship and for us to have a high view of Him.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, forgive us when we have treated you casually, when we have failed to give you proper respect. Help us to be conscious of our surroundings that bear daily testimony to your majesty and greatness and help us to have a high view of you all the days of our lives. In the name of the Lord Jesus we ask. Amen.
