DEVOTION – DAY 77

Matthew 19:26 “Nothing Is Impossible For God.”

Matt.19:26 “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

The background to the verse in Matt.19:26 was that a rich young man asked Jesus how he could have eternal life. Jesus told him that he had to keep God’s commandments and the young man replied that he had. Jesus then challenged him to give away his wealth and follow Him. The young man went away sadly because he was unwilling to part with his wealth. His actions also revealed that in his heart, he had failed to obey the first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me.” The rich young man had placed his wealth as his god above the Almighty God of the Universe and thus failed to be part of God’s Kingdom. Jesus then went on to say that it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter God’s Kingdom. The people listening to Jesus replied that if that was the case, it was impossible for anyone to enter God’s Kingdom. In v.26, Jesus replied, “With man this is impossible but with God all things are possible.”

What Jesus meant was this. There are people who, like the rich young man, think that if they do not break any laws set by the authorities, if they do works of charity and voluntary work, God will let them into Heaven. Many people do not realize that salvation can only be the work of God. It is impossible for anyone to earn a place in Heaven on their own merits. We cannot even keep to a diet to lose weight or never to tell a single lie. How can anyone be good all the time to earn a place in Heaven? Jesus confirms that with man, it is impossible, but with God, all things are possible. This means that salvation is only possible if we follow God’s way to enter Heaven. Heaven is God’s home. The key to enter Heaven is through believing by faith that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and that He rose from the dead on the 3rd day and that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. This is what God had done for us.

We know an Iranian woman. She was brought up as a Muslim. But her religion never touched her deeply. She cried out to God wherever He is, to reveal Himself to her. One day, she went to a shopping center in Tehran and she decided to sit on a bench. She noticed a book left there on the bench and out of curiosity, she picked up the book and she realized that it was the Bible in her language. She was amazed. Who left a copy of the Bible in her language on a bench in the middle of a shopping center in a country where Christianity is forbidden? She can only thank God because she knew in her heart that God heard her cries. She took the Bible home and began to read it and she soon knelt down and invited Jesus into her life as her Lord and Savior. Nothing is impossible for God when it comes to the salvation of people.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we are thankful that nothing is impossible for you when it comes to our salvation. We continue to pray for the salvation of those who have not received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. In His mighty name we ask and pray. Amen.

Questions

  1. Who can you name specifically to the Lord for them to receive God’s free gift of salvation and will you uphold them in your prayers regularly?
  2. Will you present to God what you think are impossible obstacles that are preventing the people you have named from calling Jesus as Lord and Savior? Nothing is impossible for God.
