James 3:13 “Seeking Godly Wisdom.”

James 3:13 “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”

The writer James in James 3:13-18 tells us there are 2 kinds of wisdom. There is Godly wisdom and there is worldly wisdom. Worldly wisdom is full of envy and selfish ambition. The world we live in has plenty of examples of how people live by worldly wisdom.

There are some people at the workplace where they want to work smart. This means they will work hard whenever the boss is around so that their efforts will be noticed. And when there is work that is done well, they will want to take all the credit for it even if it was a team effort. This is how some people advance their position at work. Such people will take every advantage to promote themselves in the eyes of their bosses. But there are also people who are guided by Godly wisdom. Such people work quietly behind the scenes and they do so without expectation of promotion or praise because they see it as their duty. They do their best not because they want to be noticed but because they see their service as their responsibility. Indirectly, they quietly acknowledge that they are serving God who is their overall Master. Such people are serving with humility.

There are people who give towards charitable causes. There are some people who give and want their giving to be noticed. If the amounts are large, they want it to be preferably reported in local newspapers so that others may know of their generosity. Or some wealthy people may donate money to build schools, or even College buildings and require that the buildings be named after them so that their generosity will be remembered. This is what the Bible called “selfish ambition”. But those who are truly wise will give to help others anonymously. They want to help without drawing attention to themselves. They may sponsor orphans in homes. They may send food hampers to those in need. They may offer to pay for school fees of some needy and deserving children. All their giving is done discreetly without anyone knowing. Again, this is what the Bible calls acts of giving with humility and is the result of Godly wisdom.

Let us all seek Godly wisdom that James 3 says comes from God. It is guided by humility and love for others. Let us not be tempted to use worldly wisdom that is full of selfish ambition and evil desires.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for being the source of all wisdom. Help us to seek wisdom that is from you in all that we do. Help us to fulfill your purposes with humility, through us. In the precious name of our Lord Jesus, we ask. Amen.
