DEVOTION – DAY 620
John 6:40 “The Father’s Will”
John 6:40 “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
The above verse is part of a passage where Jesus Christ revealed that He was the “bread of life” (John 3:65). Jesus was addressing many people who were following Him after His miracle of feeding five thousand people with bread and fish. The people saw Him as a means of free food but Jesus was pointing them to something deeper. He offered them life that was eternal – death cannot destroy the life that Jesus gives. The condition required to have eternal life was to believe in Him as their Lord and Savior. That He went to the cross to die on their behalf for their sins, so that judgment for their sins will not fall on them. Jesus Christ offers this same gift of eternal life to everyone who would believe today.
Today, not much have changed. People still follow after every scheme or person whom they think they can get “benefits” from. I know someone who was attracted to get amazing returns if they just invest a little money in a scheme whose algorithms would invest on their behalf and earn money even whilst they sleep. Of course it was a scam. Initially, he made money and greed got the better of him. He invested more and before long, he had invested several hundred thousand dollars of hard-earned money. He finally realized that it was a scam.
People still chase after “connections” so that those whom they think are important people to them can give them business opportunities. You see this often in the corporate world where colleagues may only appear very willing and helpful to people whom they think can be useful to them. But they treat others differently if they think such people were below them in order of business hierarchy. The truth is, ultimately, all this is irrelevant. Why chase after money, power, fame and status when it will not last nor can we take it with us when we die. What matters is a relationship with the Living God that will go on forever – that is what eternal life is. It is the only thing that will satisfy the human heart. This is the Father’s will for us.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, Your will is always perfect for us. Forgive us for the times when we try to satisfy the longings of our heart with human attractions that never last. Please fill our hearts with the desire to have an eternal relationship with You through Your Son, Jesus. We humbly pray in the majestic name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
