DEVOTION – DAY 617

Psalm 121:7-8 “God Is Always Watchful Over Us”

Psalm 121:7-8 “The Lord will keep you from harm – He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

Psalm 121 is an assurance of God’s faithfulness, presence and watchful eye over His people. We are called to trust in God as a result. The words “watch over” is repeated five times out of the eight verses in this psalm. The psalmist begins by declaring that our help is from the one true God, the King of all Creation. The psalm promises us assurance for God is a watchful guardian who never sleeps. He watches over Israel and He will watch over us. The psalm promises us assurance of unfailing protection – our foot will not slip, and He shades us day and night. The psalm promises us assurance concerning all of life.

As we watched a family member prepare to leave soon to start a new life in Europe far from home, we felt an ache in our hearts. We will not be there to help her if anything goes wrong, or to give her advice. But we shared this psalm with her and reminding her of God’s abundant assurances and promises that He, the King of All Creation is with her always. God will keep her from harm and will watch over her all the days of her life. Soon, it was time for her to take her flight. Now, looking back, this psalm offered her great comfort and assurance because the initial months settling into a new environment, language and culture had its challenges. Looking for a job was not easy and it took longer than expected. We keep in touch with our family member often using social media. We know she is in good hands because God’s presence and protection is with her now and forevermore.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship You for You are the One True God of all the Heavens and the Earth. Thank you for your presence, protection, promises and assurances. Just as You are faithful, please help us to be faithful to You and Your Word all the days of our lives. We pray in the perfect name of Your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
