DEVOTION – DAY 605

John 6:26-29 “Believe In Jesus”

John 6:26-29 “Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, For on Him, God the Father has placed His seal of approval.” Then, they asked Him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this, to believe in the One He has sent.”

In the earlier part of John 6, Jesus had miraculously multiplied loaves of bread and small fish to feed the multitudes of people following Him. After that, Jesus had left only to find that some of the people had gone looking for Him. On seeing them, Jesus in the above verses told them not to seek him out because they thought He was useful as a source of food supply. Jesus said that their priority was not to fill their stomachs but to fill their soul and spirit – to have peace, joy, love and a lasting relationship with God. Not understanding Jesus’ deeper teachings, the people asked Jesus what they must do. They thought it involved doing pious things in order to get this food that leads to eternal life. Jesus answered that they must accept God’s gift of salvation by faith and that He held the keys to their salvation. They must believe in Him as their Lord and Savior.” This command is still true to this day. All who believe by faith that Jesus died on the cross in their behalf to atone for their sins, and are willing to invite Jesus into their lives, will receive eternal life.

I know a couple who have a long list of places that they wanted to visit, thinking that they will enjoy themselves, have great experiences, eat good food etc. When I try to tell them that all these are temporary pleasures that would not last. The only thing that lasts is a relationship with the living God. Sadly, they did not appear to be interested. Another couple I know did not believe that salvation can be so simple, by simply believing in Jesus. Instead, they like to focus on being good and kind. They give generous donations to the poor and help the needy. They rejected what Jesus said in John 6:29 above.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us not to look for food that spoils but to look for food that leads to eternal life through your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to always to have an eternity mindset, and not seek after what is temporary, worldly and things that are not of you. We humbly pray in the great name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
