DEVOTION – DAY 591

Romans 8:26-27 “The Help Of The Holy Spirit”

Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

It is always a good practice when looking at specific verses in the Bible to first consider its context. Romans 8:1 declares that those who are in Christ ie. Christians no longer face condemnation. God’s Law brings condemnation and death ie. physical and spiritual death because we have all sinned and face judgment for our sins. The penalty is death and eternal separation from God. But those who put their faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior have been redeemed. As redeemed children of God, God gives them the Holy Spirit who indwells in them. The Holy Spirit is both evidence of their present salvation and a promise of their future inheritance as children of God. Even as Christians await Jesus’ return to reign and rule, and they may face sufferings, in their weakness, they have the Holy Spirit to help them.

The above verses tell us that when we are overwhelmed by difficulties to the point we do not even know how to pray, the Holy Spirit will intercede on our behalf. Since the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit and God, the Father, are so close that the Spirit’s prayers need not be audible for God knows His every thought.

We know someone who was diagnosed with a serious life-threatening condition. She was devastated and cried. In desperation, she knew she must trust the Lord and go to Him in prayer. She was still confused about the treatment that lay ahead of her. She did not even know what to pray for. In the end, she just surrendered the whole situation to the Lord trusting that the Lord knows everything, and trusting that the Holy Spirit will intercede for her. After that, she felt calmer. She knew that whatever happens to her, she is in God’s hands and that thought gave her much comfort.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you as the All-powerful, All-present, All-knowing and Almighty God. Thank you for holding us in your hands and comforting us in our times of need. Please help us to not lean on our own understanding but in all our ways, submit to your will and purposes for us. We humbly pray in the wonderful name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
