DEVOTION – DAY 586

Psalm 121:7-8 “God Watches Over Us”

Psalm 121:7-8 “The Lord will keep you from all harm, He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

Psalm 121 was written to give assurance to people in ancient times who had to travel great distances to attend festivals in Jerusalem. It assures God’s people that God is always watchful for He never sleeps (v4). It reminds us that God is our Creator of Heaven and earth and that He comes to our help (v2). That same God who is eternal and unchanging continues to watch over us all today. He continues to give us the same assurance that He will keep us from harm and He watches over our entire life. He is the one who numbers our days for He is our Sovereign Lord.

We know someone who is went through a difficult period. She had health challenges and her husband had his own health issues. In a single year, she and her husband were admitted to hospitals for treatment. Thankfully, it wasn’t at the same time. Then, as she was recovering, her daughter developed a severe allergy that caused her also to be hospitalized. It disrupted her studies and she was going to sit for her IGCSE exams at the end of the year. She was anxious that her daughter’s health would affect her studies and preparations for her exams.

But throughout this whole period, she trusted in the Lord. Even though at times it seemed that she was facing one set of challenges after another, she knew that the Lord was with her. Psalms like Psalm 121 were a great comfort and reminder for her that God is in control and keep her from all harm. Looking back now, she and her husband recovered from their health issues and her daughter is much better. She not only excelled in her IGCSE exams, she also did well in her A level exams. God is faithful and gave them the strength to persevere. God did not remove their burdens, but His grace and strength was sufficient for them. In the end, no harm came to this family, just as God promised.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you as the Sovereign God who is always watchful and protective of us. Thank you for your assurance that you watch over us and will keep us from harm all the days of our lives. Please help us to trust in you and draw upon your strength always. In the precious name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
