DEVOTION – DAY 57

1 John 4:7-8 “Loving Others”

1 John 4:7-8 “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

We cannot see God because God is Spirit. The Bible tells us that God is love and records for us how God showed His love by sending His Son, Jesus Christ to live as man and die on the cross for our sins even when we do not deserve it. This is how deep His love is for us. Even when He allows difficult situations to happen in our lives, He does it out of love so that these situations can mold us to be more like Jesus. All that He does is motivated by love because God is love.

As followers of the Lord, we are to love one another because God is love. We are to love people that are not lovable. We cannot do this on our own strength but v.7 tells us we can love one another with the love that comes from God. Therefore, when we find it hard to love people who are not lovable, we ask God to give us His love for people. We ask Him to give us ideas and ways to show our love for people who are not lovable in our lives.

We know someone who is a difficult person. She is impatient and gets angry easily. Few people like her and she often quarrels with people she comes across. Many of her own relatives avoid her. There was a time not long ago when we called her just to say hello and she spent half an hour complaining to us about everyone and everything. But we are reminded to love one another including this difficult woman. So, we asked God to give us the strength and ability to show love to her. Instead of avoiding her, we visited her whenever we could. We listened to her and allowed her to air her complaints. We realized it was a way for her to release her frustrations by offering her our listening ear. It helped her to calm down. When we offered to pray for her, she welcomed it. We offered practical advice where needed. We also took her out for a meal and we can see that she was softening towards us. With God’s help, we believe that He enabled us to love this difficult woman. God was showing His love for her through us.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us first and reminding us to love one another as you loved us. Help us to show love to others with your love including those that are not lovable. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
