DEVOTION – DAY 563

Colossians 1:15-17 “Jesus, The Creator Of The Universe”

Colossians 1:15-17 “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, in Him, all things hold together.”

The apostle Paul teaches us in these verses about the Supremacy of Jesus Christ in creation. Paul began by telling us that the Son, Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God. This means that Jesus Christ is the exact representation of the Almighty God of the Universe. We are told that God is Spirit and is thus, invisible to us – no one has ever seen God. But Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God and who came to earth as God in human form, to reflect and reveal to us what God, the Father is like.

Jesus Christ is rightly referred to as the first-born over all creation (v15). V16 tells us that Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things in heaven and on earth. V16 also teaches us that Jesus Christ is Sovereign over everything including kingdoms, powers and all authorities – whether it is the US government, or the government of China, or the Malaysian government. V17 tells us that Jesus Christ was there before even time began and that He is the One who holds all things together. Imagine, it is Jesus Christ who causes every planet in our solar system to co-exist harmoniously. He is the One who prevents meteorites from crashing into our earth causing devastation. He is the One who ensures we have sufficient sunlight and rainfall in season.

This Biblical truth is challenged by secular thinking that theorized that the Universe was created by the “Big Bang” although no scientist could adequately define nor explain what caused the “Big Bang”. Others theorized that the world we know is the result of evolution and chance. But this theory is also being challenged today. But what cannot be challenged is the existence of Jesus Christ who came to earth and whose life, death and resurrection were witnessed by many who wrote about Him. These records are not only in the Bible, but also in other ancient texts written by historians at that time. The complexity of our own human body, and the natural world around us all bear testimony to the hands of a masterful Creator.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you as the Almighty, All-powerful invisible God of all Creation. All creation and nature bear testimony to your creativity and wisdom. Please help us to be respectful and worshipful to you and not to be swayed by secular thinking that undermines who You are, the Sovereign and Almighty and Eternal God. We humbly pray in the precious name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Questions:

  • How do you see Jesus Christ? Is He worthy of your worship or do you think He was just a “good teacher” or even a myth?
  • If Jesus Christ is indeed what Colossians 1:15-17 says He is, in what new ways will you worship and obey Him?
  • How will you teach your children and grandchildren to worship the Lord Jesus in the light of who He is as revealed in Colossian 1:15-17?
  • Why is it important for us to worship the Lord Jesus in all His revealed glory? Discuss.
