DEVOTION – DAY 555

Psalm 23:4 “God’s Rod And Staff”

Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

In this well-known verse, Christians have the assurance of God’s presence through the storms in their lives. The words “darkest valley” is a metaphor for circumstances in our lives when we feel threatened or endangered, or when we face great difficulties. But God’s presence is comforting and helps us to overcome our fears and anxieties. God’s presence is symbolized by two things, “the rod” and “the staff”. The rod is often seen as a symbol of authority. In the context of ancient times when shepherding was a major occupation, shepherds often use their rod to count sheep, to guide sheep, to protect sheep and to rescue sheep. A shepherds’ staff is often used as an instrument of support, to lean on when their feet are weary. To enable them to walk firmly over uneven ground and terrain. Combined, God’s rod and staff are powerful symbols of His mighty presence to help us through our tough times. That is why this truth is comforting for people in times of trouble.

I know someone who was diagnosed with severe blockages in his heart. He was advised by his cardiologist that he needed to undergo a heart bypass procedure. As it was a major procedure, he was understandably anxious. There is always a possibility that complications may arise and so he asked his church to pray for him and for a successful heart bypass operation. On the day of the operation, he felt an inner peace because he read Psalm 23 and he felt an assurance that God was with him. Looking back, he had very little recollection of what happened in the operation theatre. His post operation recovery was smooth and he is thankful of God’s faithfulness and mercy over him. It has been a few years since his operation and he is able to have a reasonable lifestyle and his condition is stable. God has indeed been his rod and staff during a tough time in his life. God’s presence gave him the peace he needed.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we thank you for your presence in our lives. We thank you for granting us an inner peace that transcends all understanding even when we face many difficulties. Thank you for being our rod and staff, and being our tower of refuge and strength. Please help us live a life of victory free from fear and depression because we have your presence in our lives. We pray this in the gracious name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
