DEVOTION – DAY 554

Romans 10:9-10 “Jesus Is Lord”

Romans 10:9-10 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

The above verses contain some very important Christian beliefs that are central to the Christian faith. It is important that every Christian declare verbally that “Jesus is their Lord.” They not only say it, they mean in in their hearts. By doing so, they recognize that their lives are no longer to do as they please, that they now belong to Jesus Christ, their Lord who had redeemed them from punishment for their sins, by His work on the cross. Christians also believe in their hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead – this is important because Christians follow a living Risen Lord, not an idol made of glass, stone or metal that is inanimate. When they profess their faith in Jesus verbally and believe it in their hearts, they will be saved eternally from judgment for their sins by God. This is God’s promise.

We often ask people we just met to tell us how they became a Christian. That was what we did recently when we met a woman. She told us she had been invited to our church some years ago and during an altar call, she had raised her hands. It seemed the right thing to do but she had not fully understood what she had done. There was also no follow up and she continued to think she was a free thinker. Then, she joined our services a couple of months ago and have been regular. She thought that by coming to church regularly, she was now a Christian.

We had to explain to her that the way to be become a Christian involves recognizing that one has sinned against God and is need of a Savior. That Savior and Lord is Jesus Christ and when anyone opens his or her heart to invite Jesus Christ into their lives as Lord and Savior, they will be saved. We shared with her the gospel tract and led her to say the sinners’ prayer and we then, showed her Romans 10:9-10 to affirm that what she had done was biblical and certain. She was now a Christian. What a great blessing this lady experienced by making her salvation a certainty.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the free gift of salvation, and your gracious confirmation that when we believe in our hearts that the Lord Jesus is our Lord and Savior, and we profess it verbally, we will be saved. Please help us to live lives worthy of His great love for us. We humbly pray in the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
