DEVOTION – DAY 509

Galatians 6:10 “Helping Others”

Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

The Bible teaches us that God knows everything. Nothing we do escapes His attention. The good that we do to help others will be acknowledged by God one day when we stand before Him to be judged and He will reward us accordingly. Thus, in Galatians 6:10, the apostle Paul encourages us to seize every opportunity that comes our way to do good to help others, especially to help fellow Christians. Other passages like 1 Timothy 5:8 also reminds Christians of their responsibilities to help their own families in times of need, for even pagans acknowledge this as a universal responsibility to help one’s own family members.

The most obvious example of a family of believers would be our fellow church members. In every church, there are obviously many needs if we care to find out about them. On the surface, many people would not want to make public their own needs and troubles that they face. But if we desire to obey verses like Galatians 6:10, God will grant us the wisdom and discernment to go beyond the surface facades of people to know what is troubling them.

We know of people facing financial difficulties. We know people who are anxious about their health issues and would welcome people to uphold them in prayer. We know of people whose workplace is shifting location and they need regular transport to work and they are worried that they cannot afford the daily commute. We know of people who need someone to assist them when they have to go for their regular checkups in hospital. We know of people who are facing relationship issues and so on. These are just some of the many areas that people need help. They represent opportunities that God has sent our way for us to show compassion and kindness by extending a helping hand.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, just as you have blessed us and helped us, may we take the opportunity that comes our way to help others in need. Please help us to be channels of your blessing to others in our midst. We humbly pray in the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
