DEVOTION – DAY 494
Hebrews 4:12 “Power In God’s Word”
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
The Bible tells us the Word is the Lord Jesus. The Word became flesh – meaning that Jesus who is the Son of God took on human form in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Thus. Whatever Jesus said or taught is Truth that comes from God. In addition, God inspired others to record His Word, and that now forms the Bible as we know it. Thus, the Bible tells us in Hebrews 4:12, God’s Word is dynamic and active in accomplishing God’s mighty purposes. It has the power to convict hearts. It has the power to change attitudes and behavior. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, we are told that “All Scripture in God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness….” We are to be serious about what the Bible teaches because it contains what God wants us to know about Him, about ourselves and how we are to live and conduct ourselves. The Bible is therefore an indispensable part of the life of every Christian.
Some time ago, I was asked to serve in a new area for the Lord. I said I would pray about it. I wanted to know if this was what the Lord wanted me to do. Soon, I was led to a passage in 2 Cor.9:12-14. I found God’s assurance that the service I was asked to do would not only meet the needs of others, but will result in many praising God with thanksgiving in their hearts. With these verses in my heart, I agreed to serve. It is true that what I helped started caused many to praise the Lord, and are still praising the Lord.
I also met a young man. He was weighed down with many troubles due to poor management of his resources. I told him that the one who can help him was the Lord Jesus. I asked him to read Rev.3:20 “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” I also asked him to read Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” I challenged him to invite Jesus into his life as his Lord and Savior. He thought about what he had read and he made the decision to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior. God’s Word is able to touch hardened hearts because it is truth and has power.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us your Word, our light and daily bread. May we read your Word and reflect upon it, and apply it every day to give you praise, honor and glory. We humbly pray in the wonderful name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
