Psalm 106:1 – “Thanking God in all circumstances”

Psalm 106:1: “Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His love endures forever.”

It is easy to praise God and give Him thanks when everything in our lives is going smoothly. But it is difficult to give praise and thanks when we face tough times. Recently, the lives of some people we know was tough. One person suffered a stroke and his ability to function independently was affected. Another faced an ongoing illness that didn’t seem to end. A couple suffered a salary cut because of Covid-19 pandemic and another couple faced a marital crisis. Can they still give thanks and praise God under such circumstances?

The answer is “Yes.” Psalm 106 reminds us that God is good and His love for us endures forever. God never promised that we would never fall sick, or that we would not face problems or difficulties. But God promised that He will be with us and He assures us of His love. So, before we are tempted to cry out, “Lord, why is this happening to me? What have I done to deserve this?”, let us remember that God continues to love us forever. As we face our present sufferings, it is good to remember that God knows what we are going through. He knows that our troubles are painful to endure. Because God is good, He allows these troubles to build our character and trust in Him. He allows these challenging times to help us to be more dependent upon Him. For people who have been independent and self-reliant, an illness would certainly cause them to become dependent and reliant on others and God. For people who have been self-centred, a relationship breakdown will certainly cause them to re-examine themselves and seek to understand another’s viewpoint, if they want to reconcile. A loving God allows difficulties to mold us. Instead of complaining and questioning God as to why bad things happen to us, let us praise Him and give him thanks.

A woman we know has to care for a family member who has a long-term illness. She is bitter that life has given her troubles and she is unhappy and full of complaints. The condition of her family member will not change but she can choose to remain bitter or to change her attitude and how she approaches her troubles. For Christians, we have God and He is good and His love endures forever. So, even bad things that happen to us can be for our ultimate good, and to mold us. Will you praise and thank God in all circumstances?

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for the good and the bad times. We love you for you are a good God. Help us to be joyful in all circumstances recognizing that tough times are opportunities for us to trust and depend upon you. In the powerful name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

  2. If you are facing current difficulties, what can you learn about the situation about how God might be using it to mold you?
  3. Can you give thanks to God even when things are not going smoothly for you? Discuss.
