DEVOTION – DAY 452
Hebrews “Faith Rooted In God”
Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
There is popular saying, “Seeing is believing” meaning that if we see something in front of us, we will believe in its existence. But for Christians, it is different. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith or belief in something is not based on sight, but it is based on confidence in what God said and who God is. God is always trustworthy and His Word is true. Thus, if God said something in His Word, and it is consistent with His character, we have the confidence that what is said is absolutely true even though we have no other evidence. Our confidence is based on the author of the Word.
I met someone who told me that he would believe in Jesus Christ if Jesus appeared right in front of his eyes. I had to tell him that Jesus was on earth 2,000 years ago and lived for 33 years. Jesus ministered to many people for more than 3 years and carried out many amazing miracles to prove that He was the Son of God. Despite all the evidence, the people chose to crucify Him. That is because our human intellect is flawed. It can be swayed by emotion, peer pressure and so on. Our judgment is unreliable. Only God’s Word is reliable.
I also know someone who had worshipped idols for much of her life. She was carrying on the family tradition of worship. She dutifully carried out her religious rituals. But at the back of her mind, she was questioning the significance of what she was doing. Then, one day, someone shared the gospel with her. What she heard touched her. When asked if she was willing to give up worshipping her idols and instead put her faith and trust in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, she knew in her heart that it was the right thing to do. She received Jesus into her life as her Lord and Savior. She had taken a leap of faith – based upon the word of God that Christ died for her whilst she was still a sinner. She had chosen to believe that her sins have been forgiven and removed away from her. She had found peace.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you for you are trustworthy and you keep your promises. Please strengthen our faith in you and help us to keep close to you and your blessed Word. We pray this by the glorious name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
