2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “God’s Word”

2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

If you buy a new electrical appliance and want to know how to use its many functions, you would need to look at its instruction manual. In the same way, the Bible contains all the words of God that a person needs to become a Christian, to live as a Christian and to grow as a Christian. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, we are told that every single word in the Bible is given by God. This means that although it was written by about 40 different writers over more than 2000 years period, they wrote with direct inspiration from God and are considered God’s own words. The Bible is thus the main spiritual food we need to feed on daily.

A man was diagnosed with a brain tumor. In his battle with cancer, he drew his strength from reading God’s Word daily. God’s Word gave him peace even though he was scared when the tumor affected his vision. When he could no longer read the Bible, his mother would read him passages from the Bible daily. He accepted his pain, fears and treatments without complaining. The cancer worsened and he finally went home to be with the Lord. The Bible gave him hope and he held onto God’s promises. We know of another woman who also battled cancer for a number of years. The treatment drained her financially but she drew her strength from reading God’s Word. Her family members also drew their strength and hope from the Bible as they read it daily. She too went home to be with the Lord and God’s Word continues to minister to her family members as they grieve her passing.

A single mother was confident that when she sent her two daughters to study abroad, they would be fine because God would watch over them. She had raised her daughters since they were young to know God’s Word. God’s Word was the foundation for her daughters and she was certain that her daughters would not do anything she would be ashamed of. Today, her daughters have graduated and are working young adults that she is proud of.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. If you read it daily and apply what you have read, you will be equipped for every good work God has for you.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that is our daily bread. May we feed on it and know that we can face each day in victory. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
