DEVOTION – DAY 42

1 Timothy 6:12 – “Fighting sin”

1 Timothy 6:12: “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

The apostle Paul had the above parting words to share with Timothy as he leaves him to continue to carry on the demanding work in the church in Ephesus. Some Christians have the misunderstanding that once they become Christians, God would help them overcome their difficulties and life will be smooth sailing. But that is not what the Bible teaches us. As Paul reminded Timothy in this verse, the moment Timothy believed in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Timothy began a new life as a child of God. This is the eternal life and God gives us the Holy Spirit that lives inside of us and begins to help us to change from the inside. We become more aware of what is right and what is wrong. We find that we have to make daily choices to do what pleases God and avoid doing what we know is sinful. This is what Paul called the good fight of faith. And we all have to fight this good fight until the day we die. Life will not be smooth sailing. Life will be a battlefield where we must make the right daily choices to live lives pleasing to God. It is a struggle but it is worth it. We do not face these struggles alone. We have the Holy Spirit to help us. We have God’s Word to help encourage us. We can pray to God for strength.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many people think they can make good money if they can get hold of face masks and sell them for a profit because of the sudden high demand in many countries. If you are fortunate to find a supplier who can supply you a large order but the sample that was sent ahead to you indicate that the quality is sub-standard, what would you do? Will you reject the whole order and miss the opportunity to make some money? Or will you accept the order and sell the masks anyway because people will still buy them because the masks are in short supply?

Or you may be a student and because schools are closed, you have to study online. Each day, you face a battle. You are tempted to spend time on the computer playing video games and surfing the Internet. You are tempted to lie to your parents and tell them you are on the computer working on your study assignments. Will you do what is right and use the computer to study or to use it for personal enjoyment?

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us that we need to fight the good fight of faith daily. Help us to always do what pleases you and to flee from temptation to sin. In Jesus Christ’ great name we pray. Amen.
