DEVOTION – DAY 408
Isaiah 9:6 “A Child Is Born”
Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
The prophet Isaiah was the son of Amoz and he began his ministry around 740BC until 680BC. Isaiah wrote about impending judgment that would await Israel for the nation was rebellious against God. But Isaiah also offered hope in the form of God’s redemption plan. He revealed the redemption plan in the form of a son who would be given in the above verse. The son would be a royal son, in the line of King David. In this verse, Isaiah also gave us four throne names of the coming Messiah.
He would be the Wonderful Counselor – He would be the King who determined and carried out a program of action. As the Wonderful Counselor, the Son of David would carry out a royal program that would cause the whole world to marvel. In later chapters of Isaiah, it was revealed what some of the wonderful things the messiah would carry out. He is the Mighty God. The Messiah would have divine power. Then, the Messiah is the Everlasting Father. He would be the enduring and compassionate provider and protector. Finally, the Messiah is the Prince of Peace. His rule would bring wholeness and well-being to individuals and to society. His redemptive work on the cross reconciled sinful man to God, who is Holy. In Him, we will find peace with God, the Father. Isaiah gave this prophecy about 700 years before Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. Looking back on history, we can confirm that Jesus Christ fulfilled everything that Isaiah prophesied about the Messiah.
As today is Christmas Day, it is good to reflect on God’s gift to the world. More than two thousand years ago, God gave us His Son. He came into the world to be born as an infant, but He would grow up to be the Savior of the world. One day, when Jesus returns, He will reign and rule and the government will be on His shoulders. He is indeed the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. He alone deserves all our worship, praise and honor. Let us thank God for His wonderful gift to all of us.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we so thankful to you for giving us your Son, the Lord Jesus. For all who call on Him as their Lord and Savior will find peace and reconciliation with you. This is your promise and our hope. May we worship and give you praise all the days of our lives. We humbly pray in the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
