2 Corinthians 4:16-17 – “Be renewed daily.”

2 Corinthians 4:16-17: “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

How was it possible for Paul to look at his troubles as light and short-lived? How could he remain so positive despite his many challenges? Since we live in uncertain times and many are fearful of the Covid-19 pandemic and the effects of a potential global recession, let us learn from Paul.

Paul tells us not to lose heart. Every day, we age. We see a new wrinkle on our face, another grey hair, a fresh ache or pain, we feel another tired muscle. We hear more bad news about the economy and we become depressed. We worry when we look at our shrinking financial resources. This saps our soul. But, Paul reminds us that what may be happening to our bodies and as our soul reacts to our changing circumstances, our inner Spirit is renewed day by day. Our Spirit is that part of us that was awakened the moment we put our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus as our Lord and Savior and He gives us His Spirit that now lives in each one who are His followers. Our Spirit is not weighed down by circumstances. Our Spirit is refreshed as we read the Bible daily. Our Spirit is lifted up when we sing praises to God and as we seek His ear in prayer. Our Spirit is strengthened to face the challenges ahead when God minister to us through His Word. We are strengthened when we hear the testimonies of others of God’s faithfulness. We are then able to rise above our present circumstances and give God the glory.

Recently, someone became ill and could not even get out of bed. In a lockdown situation, where is help going to come from? Instead of allowing the circumstances to weigh her down, she chose to commit the situation to the Lord and ask Him to take charge. Medication was applied and she was able to call a doctor on the phone to get further advice. Instead of panic and fear, the Lord gave peace and calm. She gives glory to God. What about you? Are you fearful about something? Now more than ever, you need to be renewed daily by His precious Word. Let the Lord speak to you, strengthen and assure you.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for renewing us daily by the power of your Word and by your presence in our lives. May we walk closely with you always and give you the glory. In Jesus Christ name we pray. Amen.

  1. How will you allow the Lord to renew you daily?
  2. In what ways do you think God can strengthen you as you face challenges?
  3. How do you see your present troubles? Are they light and momentary as God wants you to see them?
  4. Who do you think wants you to feel depressed and weighed down by troubles? What must you do to avoid feeling this way?
