DEVOTION – DAY 309

John 6:35 “Jesus Is The Bread Of Life”

John 6:35 “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

This verse is the first of 7 instances when Jesus used the words “I am” to describe Himself, or as an introduction to who He was. The use of these words was striking because they pointed not only to His deity, but the number of times – seven was the Biblical number for perfection or completeness. Now obviously, Jesus was not talking about ordinary bread that people ate. Jesus wanted everyone to know that in this world, people spend their entire lives working for food like bread. But the bread they eat can only sustain them temporarily to feed their bodies. Their bodies would ultimately die one day. By declaring that He is the bread of life – Jesus is declaring that He is the source of eternal life. Those who seek Him and believe in Him as their Lord and Savior will find true sustenance. They will never go hungry or thirsty because Jesus can offer cleansing for our sins. Even though our physical bodies may die one day, our Spirit lives on as we spend eternity with Jesus.

In John 6:1-15, Jesus spent time by the Sea of Galilee to teach a great crowd of people. Time flew by quickly and evening was approaching. They were too far from villages and Jesus’ disciples were worried how everyone would be able to find food to eat. All they had was 5 small loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus miraculously multiplied the bread and the fish and everyone had more than enough to eat. The thousands of people gathered there were impressed. They wanted to make Jesus their King. They thought that they would be fed all the time because Jesus was powerful and could multiply food. So, the next day, they followed Jesus to the other side of the lake expecting more miraculous food. Jesus told them in John 6:27 “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.” When the people asked Jesus what they must do, He replied “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He sent.” Eternal life is found only through belief in the One that God sent, His Son, Jesus Christ. That is why He is the Bread of Life.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times when we trusted in material things for our security. Thank you for giving us eternal security through belief in your Son, Jesus. Please help us to always look heavenward and to live for eternity. We pray this in the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
