DEVOTION – DAY 302
Lamentations 3:22-23 “Great Is God’s Faithfulness”
Lamentations 3:22-23 “Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Although the author of Lamentations is unknown, many Bible scholars believe that the prophet Jeremiah wrote it. This was because Lamentations expressed the Jews great sense of loss that came with the destruction of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem in 586BC. This was an event that Jeremiah witnessed, and to which the writer of Lamentations described. Despite the fall of Jerusalem and the Jews being taken into exile to Babylon, the writer finds hope in the fact that God is faithful and will not forsake His people. God had made many covenants with the Jews and God is faithful. He would keep His promises and Jerusalem would rise again one day, and its people returned from exile. This was God’s great love that was referred to in v22. So, the writer reminds us all that God’s great love and compassions are new every morning. He hears the cries of His people and He will keep His promises, for His faithfulness is great. History tells us that God kept His promises. The first Jewish exiles numbering 49,697 people were allowed to return back to Jerusalem. In 516BC, 70 years after the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, the Temple was rebuilt.
A woman prayed for her husband’s salvation. He was stubborn and did not seem interested. But she knew God is faithful and God will hear her prayers. She kept on praying. Many years later, her husband did put his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Now, she and her husband began to pray for the salvation of her son who is an unbeliever. Their son was busy with his own activities and did not seem interested in God. The couple continued to pray and one day, their son agreed to follow them to church. The couple kept on praying and their son agreed to follow them to church regularly. This couple is praying that in time, their son’s heart will be open to the gospel. They believe that God’s great love and compassions are new every morning. God will answer their prayers in His perfect timing. In the meantime, they will keep on praying for their son’s salvation.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for your great love and compassions that are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Please help us to align our hearts with yours so that we will always pray in accordance to your will. We humbly ask this in the wonderful name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
