DEVOTION – DAY 293

1 Cor.6:18-20 “Sinning Against The Body”

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”

The Bible warns us to run away from sexual immorality. This is because all sexual acts of immorality involve the defiling of our own human bodies. Since the Holy Spirit lives within every believer, any sin that involves the human body directly is a sin against God, the Holy Spirit. V19 reminds us that our bodies are sacred and are to be treated as sacred because of the Holy Spirit with in. We should therefore be faithful to our spouses and never be tempted to engage in sexual activities with anyone else.  The Bible reminds us that God had saved us from the penalty for our sins and God paid a heavy price to free us from sin. V20 tells us that we have been bought at a price – it costed the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross. Instead of defiling our bodies with sexual immorality, we are to keep our bodies pure to honor the Lord.

Today, many people treat sex differently. People go online, to post their profiles on dating websites in order to meet people of the opposite sex. They go to bars and clubs and even gyms to meet people. If they are physically attracted to someone, they may try to have casual sex with them. Other people may defile their minds by looking at pornography. It is easily available on every handphone, IPad and computer. When Christians also do so, they are committing sins against their bodies without even realizing it. They are also sinning against God because their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.

A man became addicted to pornography. He then progressed to satisfying his lust by sleeping with multiple partners. He also became a drug addict and he contracted Aids. At the lowest point in his life, he read the Bible and he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He realized he had committed acts against his body and the Lord. From that day, he has kept his body pure by turning away from casual sex, drugs and pornography.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us whilst we were still sinners. Thank you for your gift of grace through Your Son, the Lord Jesus. Please help us to keep our bodies pure as an honor to You. In the wonderful name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
