Acts 1: 3–4; 8-11 and Luke 24:50-53

Where is Jesus now? Is He in heaven or with us? Why are we not able to see Jesus? Is Jesus coming back?

If Jesus told the disciples to go out into the whole world and make disciples, why did He tell them to wait in Jerusalem? They had to wait for the Holy Spirit. If they went out without the Holy Spirit they would not have God’s power to help people to believe what they said.

Though Jesus was going back to live in Heaven with His Father, He sent His Spirit to live within each person who is His disciple (Acts 1:5). Jesus’ Spirit (the Holy Spirit) gives courage and power to tell other people about Him (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit helps a disciple understand God’s Word (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit gives a disciple help to do whatever God asks (Ephesians 3: 16, 20). Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is God (Matthew28:19).

In heaven, Jesus is with His Father in His resurrected body. On earth Jesus is with us in His Spirit—the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ Spirit lives within each person who is His disciple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We cannot see Jesus’ Spirit today because the Holy Spirit is not visible. However, one day Jesus will return in His body and everyone will be able to see Him (Mt.24:30). Jesus told His disciples to always be ready for His return which could be at any time (Matthew 24:42). Until Jesus returns, we are to tell others about Him so they also can believe in Him.

Jesus is coming again!

  1. Why did Jesus tell the disciples to wait in Jerusalem?
  2. Where is Jesus today?
  3. What did Jesus tell His disciples to do until He returns?
