DEVOTION – DAY 260
Psalm 99:1-3 “A High View Of God”
Psalm 99:1-3 The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble, He sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. Great is the Lord in Zion, He is exalted over all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name – He is holy.
Many people in the world today fail to acknowledge God. They do not worship Him and some even deny His existence. Even amongst Christians, there are some who have a casual view of God. They think God is like a friendly fatherly figure and that they can turn to Him to answer their prayers.
But Psalm 9:1-3 and many other psalms like it, and many sections of the Bible tell us we must have a high view of God. In these verses, we have an image of God enthroned and He is the ruler over all nations – including nations that are Islamic, Buddhist, or Secular nations. The Lord reigns over all creation. The word “reigns” is in the present tense because the Lord is a Living God and He is Eternal. We who are His creation should tremble at His feet because we should hold Him in reverent awe. As he sits majestically on His throne in Heaven, Psalm 99:1 reminds us that the earth shakes and trembles. Verse 2 reminds us that God is to be exalted over all the nations. We are not to exalt people, position, power, money, fame and so on. The only person we are to exalt about all is God, Himself.
Verse 3 tells us to praise Him. As the Great King, we ought to tremble in fear – like Isaiah when he had a vision of God in His throne room. We are to honor His name. Because God is the Holy One, we must also be holy, set apart for Him.
We recall that when we talk to children in Sunday School, we find that they have no problem believing and accepting and being in awe of God for all the qualities set out in vv1-3. Little children look up at the sky at night and see the countless stars and stare in wonder that God is indeed a masterful Creator. But that sense of wonder wanes as children grow up into adults. We know some people who have been able to retain their high view of God and when asked for their secret, they shared that they stay close to the Bible and they walk closely with God daily. This enabled them to never forget who God is. Let us exalt His Holy Name!
Let us pray: God of all creation and Abba Father, we want to worship and exalt You. There is none like You. Please help us to always have a high view of You, to fear and love You all the days of our lives. We ask this in the Holy Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
