Matthew 28: 1–10

When have you been afraid?  Mary Magdalene and the other woman named Mary were at Jesus’ tomb. All of the sudden the earth started shaking so hard and they began shaking with fear. Did you notice who else was shaking? The guards watching Jesus’ tomb, started shaking and then they fainted. Were they afraid of the power of God? Were they afraid of the angel? Or were they afraid of what would happen to them when Pilate heard about this?

Why were the women afraid? They came to the tomb expecting to see the dead body of Jesus. Instead, they saw an angel as bright as a flash of lightening in the dim morning light. No human being could have moved the heavy stone and yet the angel made it look easy. Then the angel spoke and told them the best news they had ever heard. Jesus was no longer dead. Jesus was no longer in the tomb. Jesus was alive. With the stone rolled away, the women could look in the tomb and see that Jesus was not there.

As the women ran to tell the disciples what they had seen, Jesus met them. He really was alive! Now they knew that everything Jesus told them was true. Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah-King. He really did finish taking all the punishment for our sin. When Jesus talked with Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, He said they must not be afraid any longer. Their fear turned to joyful trust in Jesus.

Jesus was raised from death to life.

  2. What did the women see when they looked in the tomb?
  3. What did the women know to be true about Jesus?
