DEVOTION – DAY 233
Ezekiel 1:27-28 “A High View Of God”
Ezekiel 1:27-28 “I saw that from what appeared to be His waist up He looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire; and brilliant light surrounded Him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around Him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell face down, and I heard the voice of One speaking.”
In the Bible, whenever God’s glory was symbolically revealed, it often took the form of brilliant light. When Moses encountered God on Mount Sinai, he saw blinding light. Isaiah had a vision of the throne room of Heaven and again, he saw a brilliant light that he knew was God sitting upon His throne. He was so awed to be in God’s presence that he immediately fell to floor face down. Ezekiel also similarly fell face down knowing that his proper place was to worship the Lord and humbly lay at His feet.
What was remarkable about Ezekiel’s vision was that God’s glory was for centuries associated with the temple in Jerusalem. Because when King Solomon completed the temple and dedicated it to God, He filled the temple with His glory. Now, in the book of Ezekiel, God had left the temple for His people were in exile in Babylon. God was appearing to His people to confirm that He was still their God and He assured them of His presence even though they were in Babylon.
Today, God is with us. His presence is assured for all Christians because of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Christians can approach God at any time of the day and anywhere, not just in church. This is a great privilege. Yet, there are some who treat God casually. Few approach God on their knees. Some would quickly submit a list of prayer requests to God expecting God to answer them quickly. Some have lost their sense of awe because they do not see the kind of vision of God the Old Testament prophets saw. They do not see the scale and majesty of God nor share the same high view of God. Their image of God becomes a kind, friendly and fatherly figure. That should not be the case because the God of the Bible deserves and demands our due respect and awe. One day, we shall all be worshipping at His feet and dwell in His holy presence. There will be no need for the sun and the moon because His presence will give us all the light we need.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, You are Majestic, Holy and Righteous. You deserve all praise. Please help us to never lose our sense of wonder, and adoration of You, the Almighty God. We humbly ask in the matchless name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
