Psalm 90:12 “Do Not Take God For Granted”

 

Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

 

There are people who take life for granted. They think they will have a long life and so, they make plans for their future as if they are in full control of their lives. But the psalmist in Psalm 90:12 reminds us that thinking like that is foolish. The wise know that no one is in control of their lives. Only God knows how long anyone will live and so, we should live our lives well and fruitfully – to learn to number our days, is the wise thing to do.

 

Consider the passengers and crew on the ill-fated China Eastern flight MU5735 from Kunming to Guangzhou. To them, it was a routine and ordinary flight. One passenger was travelling to prepare for an impending marriage. Another was a 29 year old man on a business trip. One man had finished his business earlier in Kunming and was able to change to MU5735 flight back to Guangzhou. However, during the flight, the plane suddenly lost its elevation and started a steep descent before hitting a mountainside and bursting into a ball of flames. All who were on board died. None of them thought their lives would end so suddenly. Had they known, they would have tried to live their lives more meaningfully and wisely. They would have wanted their days to have been more significant to their loved ones.

 

The truth is that no one knows when they will take their final breath on earth and die. The Bible tells us that after death will come judgment. There are no second chances, no reincarnation, no more forgiveness. It will too late to do anything about the sins in our lives, to correct the mistakes we have made. So, the wise should remember Psalm 90:12, that life is brief and can end anytime. While there is still time, we must confess and repent of our sins and turn to God. we must live each day purposefully to love others, to love God and be faithful to Him. This is what people with a heart of wisdom will do.

 

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, You are the Giver of Life. You alone know the number of our days. Please help us not to take for granted the time you have given us here on earth. Please help us to live our lives pleasing to you and for you, so that we will have no regrets. In Jesus Christ great name we pray. Amen.
