DEVOTION – DAY 223
Isaiah 40:12-13 “Trusting God”
Isaiah 40:12-13 “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, or with the breadth of His hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as His counselor?”
The prophet Isaiah used rhetorical questions in vv.12-13 above to emphasize the power of God. He posed six questions:
- Who can hold the oceans in His hand?
- Who can contain the Universe by the breadth of one hand?
- Who can hold all the earth’s dust in His basket?
- Who can weigh all the earth’s mountains on His scales?
- Can anyone fathom the Lord?
- Can anyone be smarter than God so that he or she can counsel Him?
These questions are meant to help us appreciate that God is Almighty and thus, we should trust Him because God has the ability to deliver us, strengthen us and restore us. I recall a time when I was on holiday on a remote island. At night, when I looked up at the night sky, I marveled at the countless stars in the night sky. I knew that it was just a tiny fraction of the stars in the Universe and Isaiah 40:12-13 emphasized that God could contain the vast Universe in one hand. This is the God I can trust.
A woman felt so pressured in her job that she had to resign. It was a difficult decision for her because the family relied on her income. Her husband’s income was not stable. There was the added pressure that their children were soon going to college and they needed to set aside savings to put their children through college. Her husband reminded her that God is Almighty and He is faithful and they will have to trust Him to provide for them. For a few months, nothing happened. The woman tried applying for other jobs but nothing came of it. All the doors seemed closed. Then, a stable job was offered to her husband. Her son managed to get a scholarship to continue his studies in college. They were financially stretched but there was always money to pay all their bills and feed the family. God, the Almighty had been faithful to them.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you as our Almighty, All powerful and Faithful God. Thank you for always watching over us. Please help us to always trust in you in every circumstance. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
