DEVOTION – DAY 206

Psalm 46:1-3 “God Is Our Refuge And Strength”

Psalm 46:1-3 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”

Have you ever seen mountains fall into the sea, waters roar and foam, and mountains quake? We can see that happening in present times when recently, a volcano erupted in the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain. The volcano caused the mountain to quake as it spewed up molten lava. The lava slowly made its way down the mountainside destroying everything in its path. As the lava reached the nearby sea, the sea waters foamed sending up clouds of toxic gases. It was as if these verses were brought to life. But although the residents were fearful, these verses remind us that we are like anyone who watched the eruption and lava flows on TV from the comfort of our home. We feel safe and secure just like these verses give us the image of a firm trust in God.  Because God is our refuge and strength and we do not need to be fearful because He is our ever-present help.

As we brace ourselves for another wave of Covid-19 virus, this time fueled by the Omicron variant, we can draw comfort from these verses. God has been gracious and merciful to many of our church members. The rate of infection amongst members and their families remained low compared to the national average. God had indeed been our refuge and strength, and our ever-present help since the pandemic began two years ago. Although many of our Myanmar members suffered job losses, our church received generous contributions in cash and in kind. So, our church was able to provide regular food supplies to the members who were in need. And as we have relaxation in lockdowns, the Lord has enabled many of our Myanmar members to find alternative employment so that they begin to support themselves. Our experience over the last two years of pandemic have confirmed the truth of these verses that God is our ever-present help. So, we will not fear another wave of Civid-19 virus outbreak because these verses give us comfort and assurance that God is our refuge and strength. We will be able to live in victory and not in fear.

Let us pray: Blessed Father, we worship you for you are our refuge, our strength and our ever-present help. With you by our side, we will not walk in fear. Help us to draw people to the saving grace of the Lord Jesus, so that they too, will not need to be fearful. In the precious name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
