DEVOTION – DAY 188
Hebrews 13:8 “The Eternal Unchanging God”
Heb.13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
In Heb.13:6, the writer tells us that the Lord is our helper and we should not be afraid. The writer then reminds us that if the Lord had helped us in the past, He will certainly help us in whatever we face at present and also in the future. This is because vs.8 tells us that Jesus Christ, our Lord, is eternal. He is the same yesterday and today and forever. This is reassuring because we sometimes question and worry when we face problems that seem insurmountable. We forget that if the Lord had helped us through serious situations in the past, we should never doubt His ability and readiness to help us face whatever lies ahead. In fact, our attitude should be one of expectancy and absolute trust that the Lord will deliver us especially if we are acting within God’s Will for us.
A man worked as a photographer covering events. However, because of Covid-19 pandemic and the many long lockdowns, events were all cancelled. Suddenly, his main source of income disappeared. How was he going to support his family? His wife who is a Christian committed their situation to prayer. She knew that somehow, God would come to their aid. They had faced financial hardships in the past and they have managed to weather it by God’s grace. Just as they had to pay the school fees for the new school year for their two children, she received some bonus at work which was sufficient for her to pay the school fees. Whenever there were some unforeseen expenses, her husband would be able to sell some homemade products he had started as a side income. She is learning to trust the Lord more and more. She knows that the Lord will provide for her essential needs and God will give her just what she needs, often in the nick of time, so that God’s help is unmistakable.
Let us look at the case of George Mueller. He started an orphan’s home 200 years ago in Bristol, England. He had no money of his own but he was convinced that starting an orphan’s home was God’s plan for him. He made no attempt to ask anyone for financial assistance. He trusted that since God was behind this plan, God would move the hearts of people to give generously towards the funds needed to fund the orphanage. Beginning with a few orphans, George Mueller eventually had 5 large orphanages that housed and fed more than 1,000 orphans. Throughout, he never once asked anyone for funds or co-workers. He simply prayed and trusted God to send workers and funds. God faithfully answered his prayers. George Mueller trusted the Lord knowing that He who had not failed him in the past, would never fail him in whatever he faced, in the present and the future. He trusted in the eternal unchanging God.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you as the eternal and trustworthy God. Please help us to trust in you as our gracious Provider in every circumstance and season and all glory goes to you. In the great name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
