DEVOTION – DAY 111

Psalm 8 “Our Majestic God”

Psalm 8:1: “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.”

Psalm 8 was written by King David in praise of our majestic God who created the heavens and the earth and everything in it. God also created mankind as part of His creative design. All creation therefore bears testimony to God’s majesty and power. The apostle Paul echo similar thoughts when he wrote in Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” No one can say that they do not know that God existed because all nature, creation and the heavens are living testimonies to God’s presence and power.

I recall that when I was young, I used to help prepare the family altar especially when Chinese New Year or Spring Festival approaches. As children, we would look up at the night skies for the arrival of the god of wealth that Chinese households want to welcome into their homes every Chinese New Year’s Eve. One day, my parents took me to an emporium to see the god of wealth. I wanted to see what he looked like. But I needed to go to the toilet. As I went inside the emporium’s toilet, I saw a man there putting on makeup and dressing himself up as a god of wealth to welcome visitors to the emporium. I realized that the god of wealth was not real. The god of wealth was just make-believe.

Instead of worshipping a god that was not real, I should be looking for the true God. The true God is the One who made all the stars in the night skies. He is the God who made everything here on earth and in the heavens. But many people do not do that. Instead, they would rather worship gods made by their own hands carved out of wood, clay or other materials. Instead of worshipping God who created everything, they attributed it all to Mother Nature, or what scientists refer to as the “big bang”. We know that the “big bang” is an unproven theory and scientists acknowledge that it raises more questions than answers. The truth is staring at us all the time. It is apparent in the heavens, in outer space – that God made everything in the Universe including man and we should worship God in all His majesty and power.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, you are worthy of our worship. You are majestic and full of power. You are our Creator and we want to thank you. Help us to worship you and you alone all the days of our lives. In the name of the Lord Jesus, we pray. Amen.
