DEVOTION – DAY 108
Mark 8:35 “True Meaning In Life”
Mark 8:35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.
This verse seems strange at first reading. How can someone save their life by losing it, or lose their life by trying to save it? What the Lord Jesus teaches here is an important truth. Jesus is telling us that there are two ways to live our lives. One of the ways is to live for ourselves. This is the way many people choose to live their lives. Many people place their own interests first before anyone else. They want to live their lives to please themselves and they think they will be happy by doing that. But Jesus teaches that people who live their lives like that will ultimately find their life without meaning and empty. They will have a wasted life. In other words, they will lose their life because a life without God in it is an empty wasted life that leads to destruction.
Jesus teaches that the other way to live is to stop trying to live for ourselves. We are to give up control of how we want to live our lives and surrender it to Jesus. In other words, we must be prepared to tell Jesus that from now onwards, we are going to depend on Him to lead us and take charge of our lives. When we do that, we will find that we will begin to live a rich and meaningful life. The world may laugh if we do that because the world thinks that people who do not put their own interests first will be cheated and exploited. But Jesus teaches us that even if the worst happens and we die penniless, life does not end because we will be richly rewarded in eternity and we will be with Him. We will have the last laugh.
In November 2020, a billionaire, Tony Hsieh died suddenly. He was only 46. He was a very successful internet-based businessman. He founded a widely admired company selling shoes online called Zappos, that he sold to Amazon for USD1 Billion a few years ago. He spent his life trying to make his life and those who work for him happy. He thought that building up businesses and being successful would make him happy. But his life lacked meaning especially after he sold Zappos to Amazon. Then, the Covid-19 pandemic spread in US. The travel restrictions and partial lockdowns seriously affected Tony Hsieh’s workplans. He became depressed and he took drugs as a diversion. He felt isolated and died alone in a fire at home. Here was a man who spent his life trying to be happy and to make others happy but he lost his life during what was for him a very unhappy time of his life. The truth is that we cannot control many things in life. We cannot control our health. We cannot control Covid-19. Money and fame are not answer to true joy and lasting satisfaction in life. If we want to keep our life, we must be prepared to surrender it to Jesus and submit to Him.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for teaching us that the only way to live is to surrender it to you to take charge over us. Help us to submit and follow you all the days of our lives. In the name of the Lord Jesus we pray. Amen.
