DEVOTION – DAY 133
Hebrews 10:26-27 “Sin That Cannot Be Forgiven.”
Heb.10:26-27 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
The above verses have sometimes cause Christians to be fearful that they will lose their salvation if they keep on sinning. Although Christians have had their sins forgiven, they sometimes continue to fall back into sin from time to time. This happens in moments of weakness when they give in to temptations and they sin. When they confess and repent of these sins, God forgives them. There are passages in the Bible that confirms that once a person makes a genuine conversion to be a Christian, their salvation is eternally secure. They will never lose their salvation.
What then, is Heb.10:26-27 all about? In Heb.10:26-27, the writer warns that when a person deliberately keeps on sinning after they have accepted the gospel – this refers to a person who turns his or her back on Christianity and returns to worshipping idols. If this person does that, it means that this person no longer thinks that he or she needs Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This person now thinks he or she trusts in idols to save him or her. Thus, these verses tell us “there are no sacrifices for sins left” because that person has rejected Jesus. That person will have to face judgment and hell.
We have a friend who worshipped idols. We have been sharing with her the gospel over the years. About 8 years ago, she converted to Christianity and was baptized by her church. We were happy for her and we prayed with her whenever she faced problems. A few months ago, she told us that she had returned to worshipping idols because she was more at peace. She told us that she believes in Jesus but she also wants to believe in Buddha. We shared with her from Heb.10:26-27 and the danger of falling away. We continue to maintain friendship in the hope that she will turn back to Jesus. We realize that she is caught in a great spiritual battle and we are praying for her. Since she attends a different church, we are not sure about her understanding of her conversion and her earlier decision to follow Christ. This incident causes us to realize the importance of following up with new converts to help them to remain faithful to Christ.
Let us pray: Dear Father, thank you for your gracious gift of salvation. We pray for those who are new in their faith in Christ that may their faith be rooted on fertile soil and will bear fruit hundredfold. Please help us to follow up with new believers so that they will not fall away. In the great name of the Lord Jesus we pray. Amen.
