DEVOTION – DAY 546
John 8:12 “Jesus Is The Light Of The World”
John 8:12 “When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
The above verse is a powerful testimony of the identity of Jesus Christ. This verse was what Jesus said as He addressed people in the temple courtyard near the place where the offerings were put. When Jesus declared that “I am the light of the world,” Jesus was identifying Himself as Deity, the Son of God. 1 John 1:5 confirms to us that “God is light”. As followers of Jesus, Christians reflect the light that comes from Him, they too are “the light of the world.” Christians will never walk in darkness. The Bible refers “darkness” to the sinful world we live in, and also anything that is of Satan. Since Jesus is the light from God, He lights the way for life. All who follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior will enjoy walking in the light, Jesus, the light of the world will lead all believers to receive the light of life – this means eternal salvation, freedom from judgment for their sins and death.
We know someone who was living in darkness. He is a young man who was influenced by his friends and the worldly way of thinking. He thought he would be able to enjoy life if he had his close friends, his girlfriends, his partying, social drinking and smoking and living the good life by treating himself to designer brands. He would earn just enough to support his chosen kind of lifestyle. He saw nothing wrong with it as all his friends were doing the same thing.
Then, his steady income dried up. He tried to borrow money from his friends only to find that his friends were only “good time friends”. They started to stay away from him. His girlfriends also broke off with him because he could no longer afford to date them. He became depressed and desperate. He had nowhere to turn to and one day, he came to church hoping that a pastor could pray for him. I met him the following Sunday and over lunch, I shared the gospel with him offering the light of life, that will reveal how dark his life had become. We thank God, he received God’s gift of salvation. I told him that Jesus will help him to face all his problems. The important thing for him to do now was to walk in the light as a child of God. He must turn away from his former way of life that was destructive. It would not be easy, but it would make a real difference in his life.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you as the Light of the World, the light that draws us to your saving grace. We pray that all our unbelieving friends and relatives will one day be drawn to your gift of salvation through your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Please help them out of the darkness that they are all in. We humbly ask this in the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
