DEVOTION – DAY 471
John 6:35 “I Am The Bread Of Life”
John 6:35 “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
In John 6:25-40, crowds of people approached Jesus looking for Jesus to supply them with food. Jesus told the people not to focus on food that would spoil, but to seek for food that leads to eternal life, that only He could give. Jesus emphasized in v29 by telling the people, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.” He meant that people are to believe in Him for He has been sent by God, the Father.
In v35 above, Jesus went on to declare that He is Deity by using the words “I am”. In Exodus 3:14, when Moses asked God what His name was, God had said, “I AM Who I AM – the name by which God wanted to be known, and worshipped in Israel. It symbolized His character as dependable and faithful, who wants all people to trust in Him. For Jesus to use the same words to describe Himself in John 6:35, was to declare He is Deity. He is the bread of life that is what everyone needs. When they believe in Him, they will never thirst for anything else. In John 6:40, Jesus said, “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life and I will raise them up at the last day.”
These are powerful claims for anyone to make. Jesus was either crazy or He is who He says He is. We can believe Him because He backed up His words with amazing miracles, and taught teachings that amazed even the most scholarly rabbis at that time. So, Jesus still ask us today, “Do you believe in me as your Lord and Savior?”
We know someone who was restless. He had been successful in his career. However, he always felt that something was missing in his life. He has a family, a house but his restlessness remained. We told him that the “bread” that he had – his career, his family, his house and all his possessions would never satisfy Him, only Jesus could satisfy his thirst and hunger. We challenged him to open his heart to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He did that. After some years, looking back, he agreed with us that receiving Jesus as his Lord and Savior was the best thing he ever did – he is no longer restless because Jesus had filled his heart abundantly with His presence and His love.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship You, for only You can satisfy the deepest longings of our heart. Please help us to trust in You alone all the days of our lives and give You all the glory You deserve. We pray in the wonderful name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
