DEVOTION – DAY 249

2 Kings 6:5-6 “God Comes To The Rescue”

2 Kings 6:5-6 “As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It is borrowed!” The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. “Lift it out,” he said. Then, the man reached out his hand and took it.”

The prophet Elisha went with his men to cut down some trees by the River Jordan. One of his men was using an axe to cut down a tree near the riverside. In the process of cutting down a branch, the iron axhead fell into the river. At that time, an iron axhead was an expensive tool. Since it was too expensive for people of the prophetic community to possess, the man must have borrowed the axhead. Having lost the axhead, the man now faced the prospect of having to work as a bondservant to pay for the loss of the axhead. But Elisha acted quickly. He asked the man where he thought the axhead had fallen into the river. He cut a stick and threw the stick at the spot where the man thought the axhead had been lost. God miraculously caused the iron axhead to rise and float so that the man could reach out his hand and retrieve the axhead from the river. This revealed that God cares for the welfare of His people. It also shows that God has complete command over all creation. He could cause an iron axhead to rise and float on water when by its very nature, an iron axhead would sink to the bottom of the river because of its weight.

Today, God continues to care for His people. A woman was driving along a highway when she was involved in an accident that caused her to lose control of her car. At that moment, she cried out to God to protect her and her passengers. The impact from the accident caused her car to veer off the highway and overturned. Miraculously, her car did not hit any other car. Although the car was badly damaged, the woman and her passengers were able to be rescued quickly and they only suffered minor scratches.

A young man was diagnosed with nose cancer. He had to undergo radiotherapy treatment and the treatment tired him. Despite undergoing treatment, he had to continue to work because of his workload. He prayed to God to sustain him during this period and for healing. The Lord heard his cries and he was able to juggle his work and treatment. His cancer is in remission and he could not imagine how he could have overcome the difficulties without the Lord’s strength.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for your gracious protection and care for us. Thank you for coming to our aid in times of need. We pray this in the wonderful name of our Lord Jesus. Amen.
