DEVOTION – DAY 561
Deuteronomy 4:28-29 “Seek The Lord, And You Will Find Him”
Deuteronomy 4:28-29 “There, you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone which cannot see or hear or eat or smell. But if from there you seek the Lord, your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Moses gathered the Israelites and told them in Deuteronomy 4 that the Lord commands their obedience even as they are to be led into the Promised Land of Israel. However, if they were unfaithful, God would scatter them amongst the nations and that they would end up worshipping idols made of wood and stone, hand-made by pagans. These idols were useless because they could neither see, hear, eat nor smell. But the Lord promised that if His people would seek Him with all their hearts and souls, they would find Him, wherever they may be.
God’s promise still holds true today. It is also applied to not only how people should seek Him, but also to how they should revere God, and live in obedience to Him. They are to love and serve Him. It is also a call to anyone who had previously turned away from God to return back to Him, to repent and renew a commitment to follow and obey the Lord from now onwards.
We know someone who had spent many years worshipping idols on her family altar. She had learnt to do so from her parents. She had bought the idols from a shop that sells such things and joss sticks and all sorts of religious paraphernalia. She would burn incense daily seeking blessings for her family and herself every day. She would offer flowers and fruits to the idols even though the fruits were never touched and instead eaten by her and her family. After some time, she wondered about her daily ritual. She began to question whether there was any meaning in following the family tradition of worshipping idols.
Then, she fell sick and none of her idols could help. Her prayers went unanswered. In hospital, Christians came and prayed for her. She welcomed their prayers. She found peace and as someone shared the gospel with her, she decided to open her heart to receive Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She agreed to reject her idols. She had never looked back on her decision to seek and obey the one true Living God.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we worship you as the one true Living God of all Creation. Please forgive us for worshipping false idols. Please help us to remain faithful to you, obedient and ready to serve you all the days of our lives. We humble pray in the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
