DEVOTION – DAY 539
Psalm 25:4-5 “My God, My Savior”
Psalm 25:4 -5 “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God, my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
Psalm 25 was written by King David. At that time, David was suffering from some kind of affliction as a result of sins in his life. Sensing his weakness, David’s enemies chose to attack him by trying to slander and discredit David before the nation of Israel. David then turned to God and sought God’s help. Psalm 25 revealed what was going through his mind at that time. David called upon God by appealing to God’s character of grace, mercy, love, faithfulness and goodness (Psalm 25:6-8; 10, 16). In vv4-5 above, David also asked God for guidance in determining God’s will. David wanted to put his trust in the true Living God, who is his Savior. David looked to God to deliver him from his affliction and his enemies.
Kim Sae-Ron was a promising Korean actress who rose to fame when she was only 9 years old. She starred in both TV and movie roles and was seen as a rising star. However, her career grounded to a halt when in 2022, she was involved in an accident whilst she was drunk. She lost control of her car and it knocked down several dividers, trees and finally hitting an electrical transformer. This caused a power outage in the area and badly affected 56 businesses, until power was restored 4-5 hours later. She was fined and she suffered backlash. Her popularity dropped and her film roles dried up. She also had to compensate the affected businesses because of the power outage caused by her accident. This led her indebted to her agency for about US$500,000. She couldn’t handle the rejection and in Feb, 2025, she committed suicide at the age of 24. Because she did not have the Lord in her life, she had no one to turn to, thinking that death was her answer to end her misery.
Dr Chung Hyun Kyung was born in South Korea in 1956. She was bright and she completed her doctoral studies in 1989. She became a lay theologian with the Korean Presbyterian Church. She also wrote Christian books and was a sought -after speaker in Korean Christian circles. In 1991, she was invited to speak at the World Council of Churches meeting in Canberra, Australia. Unfortunately, her speech was widely misquoted, and she was falsely accused of combining Christian teachings with practices of other faiths, by her critics in Korea. During this difficult period, she turned to the Lord as her Savior and deliverer, to weather all the criticism. She found the grace to defend herself with dignity and the matter was eventually forgotten. Like King David, she learnt to turn to God for her deliverance.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we thank you for your faithfulness, grace and mercy. Please help us in our time of need, and remove all our fears as we trust in you alone. We pray this in the wonderful name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
