DEVOTION – DAY 479
2 Timothy 3:16-17 “God’s Word”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
The writer, Paul, confirmed that the Bible is God-breathed. This points to God’s active involvement in the writing of the Bible. It consists of 66 books written by 40 human authors but it is God who directed and inspired them to write every word. God’s involvement is ,complete and absolute. That is why the Bible is authoritative, harmonious and without error.
The harmony of the Bible is only possible because of God’s unseen hand over every book. This explains why the Bible has the same theme and gives the same image of God, even though the 66 books were written by different people from different walks of life across many centuries – from its earliest books to the last book, Revelation. The Bible is God’s revelation about Himself, His purposes and plans for us. The Bible is therefore useful to guide us, to rebuke us when we stray. to correct and train us to live lives pleasing to God.
It is as if God is speaking and teaching us directly.
I have used these words “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.” (Romans 6:23); and the words, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). They were taken from the book of Romans. I have known of a number of people who responded to these words, with the realization that their hearts have been convicted of their sins. And, they need to confess and invite Jesus into their lives as their personal Lord and Savior. These words resonate truth. Although written almost 2,000 years ago, they still have the power to convict hearts in every generation – ,because they are the Word of God. Because it is truth, it is applicable in every generation regardless of race, language or culture.
John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, attended a church meeting one evening in 1738. Sitting there in the church, someone was reading aloud from the book of Romans. For the first time, John Wesley knew in his heart that he was a sinner, and that Jesus had died for his sins. He was convinced that he has been forgiven by God and that his salvation was assured. This discovery sent him on a journey to become a leading theologian, clergyman and evangelist of the 18th century. There have been many before and after him that were similarly convicted by the Word of God.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, your Word is truth. Thank you for your Word that is a light unto our feet. Please help us to read and apply your Word daily in our lives. We humbly pray in the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
