DEVOTION – DAY 351
John 14:27 “Jesus’s Peace”
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Jesus was speaking to His disciples. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” This was a common greeting that Jews greeted each other. But Jesus used the word “my peace” in a much deeper manner. The peace that Jesus was going to give to His disciples, was a reference to His work of salvation on the Cross. His death and resurrection would bring about the complete well-being and inner rest for a person’s spirit, when the barrier of sin is removed. Every believer would be able to fellowship with the Living God.
The peace that the world gives that Jesus referred to in John 14:27 were no more than a longing and a wish – that is what people mean when they send their peace to us. But Jesus’ offer of peace is real, and it is present, and is freely offered to all who would believe in Him as their Lord and Savior. When we have His peace, we will never have troubled hearts. We do not need to be afraid of death, of judgment for our sins and so on.
We know someone who worshipped idols for much of her life. She would observe all the temple festivals and pray for success, and well-being for herself and her family. But she was never sure of the effectiveness of her prayers or whether the idols heard her. She had been raised to worship these idols, and it was part of her tradition and culture. Through a personal health crisis, and when her prayers to her idols for healing went unanswered, she accepted the prayers of Christians out of desperation. She got better. This was the turning point for her to seriously consider whether the Christian God was the true God compared to her idols. In the end, she chose to follow the true Living God of the Bible and invited Jesus into her life as her Lord and Savior. She finally received His peace. She realized for the first time, an inner peace she never had before. From that day, she stopped worshipping her idols.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, You are the source of peace. It is a peace that is everlasting and gives us inner rest. Thank you for giving us this peace through your Son. Please help us to live worthy meaningful lives to give glory to you. In the great name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
