DEVOTION – DAY 232

Hebrews 2:9 “Glory And Honor To Jesus”

Hebrews 2:9 “But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.”

As we have just celebrated Good Friday and Easter Sunday, it is good to reflect on the work of Jesus on the cross. Heb.2:9 tells us that Jesus was made lower than angels for a little while. How was He made lower? The Bible tells us that Jesus was with God from the beginning. The Bible tells us that Jesus, the Son of God is equal to God, the Father. In John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and the Father are One.” That means that Jesus, God, the Son is divine but He chose to set aside His divinity in order to be born as a human being.

The fact that Jesus was fully human is important. As fully God, Jesus in His divinity would be immortal and invincible. He had to be incarnated as Jesus of Nazareth, to become fully human in order to suffer and die on the cross. As a human being, Jesus could feel pain. He could shed blood if He suffered a cut. Jesus could feel hunger. He could weep. He could experience mental anguish and could identify with the whole human experience that every human being goes through in life. The feelings of rejection, the feelings of loneliness, the pain of injustice and so on. Everything we may experience in life, Jesus Himself have experienced it firsthand.

That is why He was made lower than angels for a little while so that He could go to the cross and die – that He might taste death for everyone. But because Jesus is also fully God, His one-time sacrifice on the cross was sufficient to atone for the sins of all who would believe in Him as their Lord and Savior. All sins, past, present and future would be forgiven by God and considered settled in full when Jesus died on the cross. And to show that God had accepted Jesus’ sacrifice and declared it sufficient for His judgment for our sins, God raised Jesus on the third day and crowned Him with glory and honor.

In the war in Ukraine, some soldiers sacrificed their lives in order to save some of their fellow soldiers. While this is commendable, their sacrifice only saved a few other lives. But in the case of Jesus, His sacrifice could save an infinite number of repentant sinners who would believe in Him as their Lord and Savior.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, all praise, honor and glory belongs to you, the Lamb upon the throne. Thank you for your mighty work on the cross. Help us to never take for granted what you have done for us and may we love and obey you all the days of our lives. In the name of the Lord Jesus we pray. Amen.
