DEVOTION – DAY 126
Isaiah 9:6 “Many Titles”
Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born to us a son is given, and the government shall be on his shoulders. And he will be called, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
The prophet Isaiah prophesied and wrote about the Messiah and this verse is one of the Messianic verses found in the book of Isaiah. It was written about 700 years before Jesus was born. Yet, Isaiah foretold some of Jesus’ qualities. In this verse are listed 4 sets of names. He is the Wonderful Counselor. The Messiah would be sitting on King David’s throne as a King who will carry out a royal program that will cause the world to marvel. The word “Counselor” was used at that time to refer to someone who decides upon and carry out an action plan. The Messiah is the Mighty God. Jesus is both Deity and powerful. The Messiah is the Everlasting Father. This gives us an image of someone who provides, protects and He will do this forever. And the Messiah will be the Prince of Peace. This points to Jesus bringing peace to mankind who was separated from God, the Father because of sins in their lives. Isaiah wanted us to know that the Messiah has many qualities and not one single title will adequately capture who He is.
The Bible has many other titles given to Jesus. Each title points to a different quality of the Lord. He is the Alpha and the Omega, Son of Man, Son of God, Lion of Judah, Lamb without Blemish, Lamb upon the throne, the Rose of Sharon, Emmanuel, God with us and so on. These are all titles. Jesus has a name given to Him by God, and that name is Jesus. His name means “Savior”. Only Jesus could live up to His name. Jesus deserves every one of the titles given to Him in the Bible because He fulfilled every one of these titles.
We contrast this with the way titles are given to certain people but they have somehow failed to live up to their honorary titles. Here, in Malaysia, prominent people may have titles like “Datuk” or “Tan Sri” that may be similar to the titles in UK where some people have the titles “Sir” or “Lord”. It points to the person having made some significant contribution to society. But in reality, we see some people with such titles who have committed crimes and have their titles stripped from them. Or they may have done something scandalous bringing disgrace to their title and name. There is only one person we can trust and will never disappoint us because He lives up to His titles and that is Jesus Christ. He is deserving of our wholehearted worship.
Let us pray: Dear Father, we worship you for you are full of grace and mercy, your love knows no bounds. We adore you. May we never use your name in vain and may we praise you all the days of our lives offering our lives as living sacrifices to you. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
