DEVOTION – DAY 145
1 John 2:21 “Knowing The Truth”
1 John 2:21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
Today, many people think life is complicated. It is complicated because nothing is what it seems anymore. A man is no longer just a man, or a woman just a woman. They can be transgender. Children may not want to be identified with just one sex but be referred to as non-binary. Young couples prefer to just enter into a relationship and call each other partners. They think marriage is a legality. It just complicates matters when it is time for the couple to split and move on to other partners. One person may think smoking is bad and another person thinks it is good. It is just a question of preference. Nothing is simply right, or simply wrong because everything is relative. This is why people think that life is no longer seen in black or white terms because we live in a world where everything is grey and no longer clear-cut. Is that true?
We find an answer in 1 John 2:21. The apostle John tells us to look to the truth. The source of all truth is God. God has made his truth known to us through His written Word, the Bible. Therefore, all Christians who have their Bibles do know the truth. God’s Word does not contain any lies. So, if we are faced with a situation where we are not sure, then, we need to seek God and His Word for guidance. For example, in Gen.1:27, it tells us that God created man in His image, and in His image, God created them male and female. The Bible tells us that we are born either male or female – there is no such thing as a transgender or non-binary. These new definitions are the result of human thinking. It is of this world and it is a lie. Another example is from Gen.2:24 where God planned a man to leave his parents and be united to his wife and they become one flesh in marriage. Marriage is God’s plan for a man and a woman. Thus, when a man and a woman choose not to marry, and live together out of wedlock, they are living a lie. Their excuses not to get married leads to lack of commitment and instability in their relationship. Another example is in 1 Cor.6:19. It tells us that one’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Thus, smoking damages the health of one’s body and is therefore bad. From these examples, we find that when we know God’s Word, we have the truth and we will be able to tell the difference between what is truth and the lies of this world.
Let us pray: Dear Father, we worship you because you are the All Wise God and we thank you for giving us your Word that is to be our guide and for our instruction. Please help us to apply your Word in our lives for eternal good and to discern and avoid the lies of this world. In the precious name of the Lord Jesus we pray. Amen.
