DEVOTION – DAY 91

Psalm 119:105 “The Bible Is Our Lamp”

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

This verse is from the longest psalm in the Bible and it also happens to be the longest chapter in the Bible as well. The psalmist was someone who loved God’s Word and he imagined God’s Word as a lamp for his feet. At that time, there was no electricity so unless the moon shone at night, people will have to grope about in the dark. People had to depend upon the light that comes from a handheld lamp to light up their way if they want to go out. The psalmist likened God’s Word to such a light coming from a lamp so that he can see the way ahead. This is an appropriate image to describe the power of God’s Word.

Today, the world we live in is a dark place. It is dark because people believe in the lies told to them through popular culture, movies, pop songs and so on. Popular culture accepts same sex marriages. It is now practiced in the West and even legalized in Taiwan. If someone were to oppose same sex marriages, the person would be considered intolerant. Popular culture has changed many people’s attitudes so much that many accept gay culture as normal. But the Bible that is God’s Word shines through all the lies. The Bible tells us in Genesis 2 that God created man and woman. In Gen.2:24, the Bible tells us “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” God’s Word clearly tells us that God’s design is for a man to marry a woman and the idea of a same sex marriage is not from God. It is man’s idea.

Popular culture tells people they have the potential to be great. All they have to do is to work hard, make money and then, they will be happy. Many people follow this popular idea except that in the end, they find that money does not necessarily make them happy. To make a lot of money, many had to make sacrifices and compromises and instead of being happy, many are filled with regret. The Bible is our light and in 1 Timothy 6:10, it says: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” This explains why we see sometimes wealthy or famous people end their lives because they have fallen for the lies that money will make them happy and they made compromises and ended with regrets and found unhappiness instead. So, let us always look at the Bible as the source of truth and it is indeed our daily bread, our daily guide and the light for our feet.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the Bible that is indeed the light that shines in our lives, that helps us see through the lies of this world. Help us to follow and obey your Word every day. In the name of our Lord Jesus we pray. Amen.
