Matthew 27:57-61

Long before Jesus died the prophet Isaiah said that Jesus’ body would be buried in the tomb of a rich man. Isaiah 53:9 says: “He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.” When the words of a prophet actually happen, we learn that God is powerful and can do everything He promises to do. God was in control of all the events of Jesus’ death.

Not all the religious leaders hated Jesus. A religious leader named Joseph of Arimathea believed Jesus was telling the truth when He said He was the Messiah. After Jesus died, Joseph asked Pilate for Jesus’ body. Most bodies of people who died on a cross were thrown away without being buried in a grave. Joseph wanted to honor Jesus by wrapping His body in a special cloth and putting it in a new tomb. This was a burial that only a rich person could afford. Joseph was a rich man who could buy a tomb no one had ever used. After Joseph put Jesus’ body in the tomb, he rolled a large stone, too heavy to lift, over the opening.

Through the prophets, God told us many truths about the birth and death of Jesus long before Jesus came to earth. When prophecy actually happens, we learn that God’s Word is true. God has a plan and He has the power to make His plan happen. Joseph did not know it, but through him God was fulfilling His Word about Jesus’ death.

Jesus was buried according to God’s plan.

  1. Who was Joseph and what did he believe about Jesus?
  2. What did Joseph do with Jesus’ body?
  3. What do we learn about God through fulfilled prophecy?
